A closer look at AppX in Windows 10

Modern Applications contains plenty of new features, functionality and improvements over traditional applications.

In this article I will focus on adding and removing AppX packages or Modern Applications from Windows 10.

I will use Camera in this example.

Removing AppX packages

Start Windows PowerShell as Administrator
Run the command:
Get-AppxPackage –name *camera*This will display all the information about the Camera application.

To remove the camera run the following command line:
Get-AppxPackage –name *camera* | Remove-AppxPackage
The camera application isnt available anymore for the end user but the package files are still on the system in the folder:
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\
Microsoft.WindowsCamera_5.5.6.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe

Adding AppX packages

To add an AppX application, we need the AppxManifest.xml file. The packages are in the folder C:\Program Files\WindowsApps and in the subfolder of the packages, the AppxManifest.xml is located.
To add the Camera application to Windows 10, I will use the AppxManifes.xml file: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps
\Microsoft.WindowsCamera_5.5.6.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
Run the command:
Add-AppxPackage -register ‘C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\
Microsoft.WindowsCamera_5.5.6.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\AppxManifest.xml’ -DisableDevelopmentModeDo not forget to use the –DisableDevelopmentMode when adding the package otherwise it will fail.

The camera application is now available from the start menu.
